We all try to stay impartial during elections, but do you ever give generic advice to your members on what they should look for in municipal leaders/what good government looks like? Alternatively, what do you usually do when municipal elections come up to be involved in the issues but stay apolitical?

The Winnipeg Chamber of Commerce launched an initiative prior to the 2006 Municipal Election entitled PAR (Political Accountability Report). We put together a 20-question questionnairre baed on Chamber policy that we sent to all candidates running for election. Once we receved the results we tabluated how they eay each scored based on our 20 questions and made the results public. I to worked extremly well and also provided us with valuable information and policy information follwoignthe election. If you would like more information on this initative please don't hesitate to give me a call

The Free Press has an interesting Op-Ed on this issue, "Province could spur municipal politics" by Doug Dobrowolski, president of the Association of Manitoba Municipalities.

Doug talks about some of the barriers to entering municipal politics and what the Provincial Government can do about it. They may be issues you want to take up with your members to see just how much of a barrier they are to people throwing their hat into municipal politics.
